Founded in 2007 by Julia Ainsworth, Zeitgeist Theatre Collective is dedicated to creating, developing and producing new works and modern adaptations relevant to a Canadian audience. Zeitgeist Theatre Collective aspires to create theatre that carries currency within the context of the now , provokes intellectual, emotional and visceral responses and inspires dialogue and forward thinking surrounding contemporary issues. Through its work, the Collective aims to explore aspects of the human experience while questioning the form and function of theatre in modern society.
The company has produced productions in Toronto and Montreal including an adaptation of Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikins’ Savage/Love directed by Julia Ainsworth at the Alchemy Theatre in Toronto (January 2007) and Blight (written and directed by Julia Ainsworth), which premiered as part of the multi-disciplinary project Reflexions Urbains in September of 2008.
On December 14th, 2009 Zeitgeist Theatre Collective hosted a Cabaret/Launch Party at Theatre St.Catherine to announce its commencement as a new company in the Montreal Community. The Launch Party featured an eclectic array of performances by local artists including DeAnne Smith, The Fruiting Bodies, Anna Fuerstenberg, Sarah Quinn, Solomiya Moroz and Miss.Sugarpuss.
A workshop production of P4W: Invisible Stories from Canada's Prison for Women, written and directed by Julia Ainsworth, successfully premiered January 27th, 2010 in Montreal. P4W will be returning with a full production in fall of 2010. Stay tuned for details!
